Legal interpreting is unforgiving. Testimony is recorded, challenged and relied upon, and a hedge, a qualifier or a change of tense carries evidential weight. I interpret in the first person and render exactly what is said — including hesitation, self-correction and inconsistency — without smoothing, summarising or explaining. If a witness gives an unclear answer, the court hears an unclear answer and can question it properly.
Where a legal term has no equivalent in Somali or Arabic, I interpret it and then state on the record that an explanation may be needed, so that the court or the lawyer, not the interpreter, supplies the definition. I ask for repetition when speech is inaudible or overlapping, and I never guess at content I did not clearly hear.

Impartiality and conflict of interest
In a courtroom my neutrality is not a courtesy, it is a requirement. I take no side, I have no interest in the outcome, and I do not advise, comfort or advocate. If I know a party, have interpreted for an opposing party in a connected matter, or have any other conflict, I disclose it before the proceedings begin so the court can decide how to proceed.
I do not hold private conversations with any party during a hearing. If a client speaks to me directly outside the exchange, I inform the court or lawyer that this has happened rather than dealing with it silently.
Preparation matters
Legal interpreting improves dramatically with preparation. Where confidentiality allows, a case summary, a list of names and places, the charges or grounds, and any documents likely to be read aloud let me prepare terminology in advance. All material shared for preparation is treated as strictly confidential and is destroyed after the assignment.
