A doctor deciding on treatment, a magistrate weighing testimony and a caseworker recording an account all need the same thing: English that reflects precisely what was said, including uncertainty and contradiction where they exist. My role as an English interpreter is not to tidy a statement into something more coherent than it was. If a speaker is vague about a date, the English I produce is vague about that date, and the professional can then probe it properly.
I interpret consecutively in the first person and keep interventions minimal and visible. When I need to ask for a repetition, clarify a term or note that something is untranslatable, I say so openly to both parties. Nothing is exchanged privately with either side during an assignment.

I will position myself so that the professional and the client speak to each other rather than to me, and I will ask both sides to speak in manageable segments.
Where an assignment is emotionally heavy — a bereavement, a disclosure of violence, an unfavourable decision — I keep the register faithful and steady. My practice is trauma-informed, and I do not add or absorb emotion that belongs to the speaker.
